Parental question

All parents wonder about: Who molded the personality of our children – nature or nurture? No one really knows but I hope I had some influence on mine. PS The first candle of Hanukkah is my youngest son’s birthday! Mazal tov and happy Hanukkah!

From a distance

ties that bind

Something binds us to our families, but recently these ties have been tested by distance and the passage of time. In this week’s Torah portion, Jacob and Esau are brothers but they would never live together at all, for better or for worse.

Still have hope

This week’s Torah portion, Toldot, reminded me of a wonderful song, There is love in meיש בי אהבה and the different versions. Two of them are linked to this midrash, one by Arik Einstein and one by Arkadi Duchan (who wrote the words and music) but these are several more and each one gives another interpretation to these beautiful words. We are all enriched by the unique vision of these versions.

Empathy and compassion

Is there a difference between empathy and compassion? Could empathy be when we try to understand how others be feeling; whereas compassion calls us to action so if a someone is distressed you want to comfort them. Lately these emotions haven’t been very popular, but maybe they will be in the future, so our world will be a more comforting place to live in.

Moving out לך לך

Images of today’s migrants and immigrants frequently fill the news. The best planned move is stressful, so moving to a totally unknown place must be difficult to say the least. Most of us can only try to imagine the situation. So too Avram and Sarai moved out and on to a unique journey that fills many chapters in Genesis.

And now Noach is out !

It is appropriate that my midrash comes online, because it is relevant to doors that have been closed during this era of COVID-19. Many of us have experienced isolation or even lockdown. When our doors fling open, we need to appreciate the vibrant world around us!
